878 Banff/Canmore Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets on Facebook
The 878 Banff/Canmore Squadron Air Cadets is but one example of groups associated with Canmore Legion.
878 Banff/Canmore Air Cadet Squadron is located in Canmore Alberta in the Canadian Rockies. 878 Squadron was chartered on 1 July 1980, and is the only cadet organization in the Bow Valley covering the townships of Banff, Canmore, Exshaw, Seebee, Morley and Lake Louise. Having a strength of 45 cadets, 6 officers, 2 CIV’s and numerous volunteers.
Since its inception our Squadron has worked hard towards building a good rapport with the surrounding communities and is jointly sponsored by three branches of the Royal Canadian Legion. They are;
- # 3 Three Sisters Branch Royal Canadian Legion – Canmore
- #26 Colonel Moore Branch Royal Canadian Legion – Banff
- #179 Heart Mountain Branch Royal Canadian Legion – Exshaw
During 878 Squadron’s developing years and right through to today, they have had dedicated cadets and strong well trained Staff and Sponsors for ongoing recruiting and providing support to maintain our Squadron strength. High espirit de corps and unit participation, has led the squadron to be selected for various provincial awards.
Air Cadets are not members of the Canadian Armed Forces. The movement is, however, sponsored by the Department of National Defence in partnership with the Air Cadet League of Canada.
HERE IS A LIST OF SOME OF THE THINGS THAT AIR CADETS DO:
Citizenship, Leadership, Community Service, Drill, Sports, Marksmanship, First Aid, Navigation, Meteorology, Principles of Flight, Airport Operations, Engines, Aircraft Identification, Aerospace, Effective Speaking, Biathlon, Gliding, Survival, weekend exercises and music (just to name a few)!
The motto of the Royal Canadian Air cadets is: to learn, to serve and to advance!
This works well with in the aims of the program which are:
- to develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership; to promote physical fitness
- to stimulate the interest of youth in the Canadian Forces, particularly the Royal Canadian Air Force
- to promote and encourage among young people a practical interest in aeronautics
- to assist those intending to pursue a career in the field of aviation in Canada
The program is free for the youth of Canada between the ages of 12 and 18. We welcome all youth from the Bow Valley to come and check us out and try something new and exciting.
A great big Thank You to ALL of the Legions whose support we have received over the years as well as the communities of the Bow Valley that have helped us and have donated their expertise, their time and also their sponsorship. The Canadian Cadet Organisations are strong today because of community support
